It's TastyLinks™ Time!

Here’s a necklace I made this past summer that’s in the spring 2009 Eye Candy issue of Stringing magazine. I’m sending this to my lil sis as a belated b-day gift. I love the colors here and the combo of glass, resin, pearl, sterling and gemstone beads. It’s a more delicate scale, which is nice in hotter months. Sometimes a ginormous necklace feels too heavy when the mercury is rising. Pick up the issue for step by step instructions and to see the work of a bevy of other talented designers.

This week’s TastyLinks™ aren’t super sized. I’m featuring the links from the talented crew of Crafty Bloggers...which should keep you plenty busy!

A HAPPY ENDING...............

THE END OF THE SHORTEST MONTH

28TH FEB;the shortest month ends tonight.a lot to remember and a lot to forget...........i became an active blogger this month.[last october during navrathri days i had started my hobby as a blogger, but didn't continue.caught with laziness, lack of inspiration[my mazakali kept on telling.....................still,],hectic office work.anyways iam happy to be a member of the bloggers' long list.

the day began with a short chat with kishan.morning was pleasant and there was celebration of national science day.'meet the scientists' was presented.but i enjoyed my last year's presentation on water and water sources and the reaction of villagers to the much awaited rain.the moments of pride to write the script and direct 70 characters.it was a visual treat with science, music and dance.

with heartfelt gratitude to vanitha-jan-for introducing manu to the world and he inspired me unknowingly to write again . the humorous style tickled my laughter bones.an excellent writer, who has to reach greater heights.good luck, manu.

everyone wants to make a good first impression.may be we struggle for attention n popularity.i drew line in between many friendships.someone who wanted to read my posts very badly never knows, iam a blogger, now.[but i keep a track of his updates]. for once in life time i want to prove, iam the strong silent type.

i believe,i could communicate some of my deepest feelings with my readers.while writing, i was tracking down a few childhood memories.the village ,the temples, the nalukettu, our kalari, the spacious kulam, pambin kavu, mundiyan thara, kolan mangoes, sharkara manga, kumkumapookal, and the joint family.the long walks to little flower convent school and later to the college.and now the short cut through punnathoor kovilakam has changed into aana thavalm and one gets to see more than sixty elephants.[the popular movie, oru vadakan veera gadha was shot here].it's a popular tourist spot now.in the evenings me and nanda taking brisk steps to catch up with amma who was the respected teacher of the neighbouring school.the beautiful life with no tensions and stress.amma,i cherish those walks back home with u.

the summer vacations in andathode,in achan's three storeyed mansion and proudly we used to say, kamala das ,is our neighbour in punnayoorkulam.[felt so sad to see her the other day on tv channel.age has gripped her and she was struggling to talk.........]the beautiful house overlooked into fields and small ponds in between.i saw ducks for the first time there.these memories triggered feelings of affectionate amusement.the bed time stories achamma used to tell us,how can we forget?

guys,be honest,be kind,look around,without uttering the words,the message can get through........

thanks my unknown friend, who spends time in the wee hours of the morning to send beautiful morning greetings.

the other day we attended the birthday bash of little rohan.he turned one year and the cake was cut at his time of birth-8.10.that was a novel idea.the venue was zeebop at utorda beach.a beautiful beach and even after along stay, i hadn't been to this wonderful sea shore.there was live music, drinks and games.the b'day boy,his dad and many guests were in red wear.

i have to set new goals in the forth coming month and i fear i won't be able to write more posts often.only after the goals are reached,i can ease up.satisfaction has to be found in the search.then i can celebrate.i can tell myself,''iam on my way.it feels great.''

the dust has settled and the afternoon slipped towards evening.i feel far away, the jasmine is blooming for me.

it took me a long time, but i learned that life doesn't come with a plan.to some extent, the pages are blank.we may have a rough outline of where we are going ,but
we won't get there without making some tough decisions.

iam tired. needs to get refreshed.how much anu loves to hear,''i'll be there''.[but,i have to learn to listen].i have to slow down.

thanks for the one line message .it did make a differene to the evening.
a good-bye signals a change and change is rarely easy-sometimes it breaks our hearts.any time can be a good bye time.

and to u,

Winner, winner, chicken dinner!

I'm here to announce the winner of last week's Rings 'n Things giveaway! Postal Orphan step up and claim your prize! Email me at theimpatientcrafter@gmail.com with your snail mail address! I've had several winners here never email me with their mailing addresses. I'm not quite sure what's up with that. If I don't hear from you soon, I guess I'll offer the prizes again as one big prize package! I'm unable to use my psychic powers to deduce your mailing address, unfortunately. My Yahoo business email account seems to be riddled with bugs, so perhaps you emailed me and it got lost in the ethers? You can also leave your snail mail addy in a comment here if you feel comfortable doing so.

Oh and please fret not about my post yesterday my pets, I share the good, the bad and the ugly here. I do that because it's my way of inspiring you to risk, dare, dream and make glorious mistakes! If I were really sad, I'd not be blogging. I'd be washing a pint of Ben and Jerry's ice cream down my gullet with a dry South African sauvignon blanc while watching Willy Wonka. If you want to create your own reality, you will occasionally fall on your booty and if you want to keep it up you will dust off said booty, flick that gorgeous mane of yours defiantly and get back to the business of making the magic.

Huzzah.

SPEAKING MY MIND...................

IN A DIFFERENT LIGHT..................

It's a lonely night.........spending a few minutes in the balcony looking into the beautiful harbour, the sea with the reflected light and the star studded sky......mind gets refreshed.it was an ordinary day.as usual ,an unknown friend sends the good morning greetings sincerely and i never acknowledge his kind gesture.may be,i don't want to build any more bonds. thanks a lot for taking time for me to send those beautiful lines.........

friend,i had read those offline messages but was not in a mood to reply.[you are such a good friend, but at times,i behave this way].morning when you spend time to browse through my posts,u will find the answer.u must be wondering where did i vanish?or why not in touch since days.i don't have an answer. it happens.for no reasons u feel low.getting the negative emotions under control is very difficult.the bright level of self esteem disappears.one tends to get upset.human nature is really strange.

i think,i have to put out set backs in an imaginary envelope labelled ''waste of time'' and brushing off negative people and put them under the category,''toxic''.how can i permit someone to take me for granted? hey, stop that.

this happens.this is a passing phase.when we focus on another person's story,we overcome our internal distractions.when people get the opportunity to speak and be respectafully heard,it gives them a feeling of empowerment.

during these late hours of the night,i think of the fresh jasmine, evergreen trees in the mountains, roses in the garden and my amma and my home.i'm eagerly waiting for this summer to catch the first konkan railway to reach my hometown.my stress buzzer, the only way to get my heart light and mind peaceful.

the large compound, the nagakkavu, the tall tamarind trees, the swarna malaripookal, the mangoes and jasmines.looking forward to capture and cherish the childhood memories................wanna talk to me?like the carefree child ,i spend the days with amma and she teaches me how to forgive to feel better.it's difficult,i know.but,i try.my attidute wears a new look.at guruvayoor temple,i meet my school mates.they bring back the good old days. darshan of unnikannan gives me relief and satisfaction.
we meet most of our classmates in temples].last time i was introduced to pushpam's son at varkey's.she was my close friend of 'little flower'and after many years we could talk to each other on phone.

when we cousins and friends walk down home, after the classes, the group of boys meet you regularly and when they come closer, the dark short guy, utters,''zindabad''.that was a code word for being the leader of a procession.and one enjoys the special recognition and identifies the glow in the eyes.later he reached the middle east and later settled down in the nearby village.when someone points out his huge bunglow,u can't help giving a smile.

we always carry the lighter moments of life.

good morning!have a great day ahead............[it's morning now....

and to u,
rahi baat aank mein aansuon ki...........,
kissie ke dard ko apana samjhna
har kissi ke bas ki baat nahim

the simple unforgettable teen experiences.more in the later post.
i don't want to let go all those sources of inspiration.they give me strength..

MAHA SHIVRATHRI..............

HAPPY SHIVRATHRI..........

May Lord Shiva Bless One And All..................
.
woke up early morning. after the daily routine, visited Khandeswar temple and Ayyappa Temple.there was a long queue at Shiva Temple.devotees were doing palabhishekam on SHIVLINGA on their own. the temple is spacious and HANUMAN n DEVI upaprathishta.

and our own AYYAPPA TEMPLE.we feel so nice, refreshing and relieved after having darshan of KALIYUGA VARADAN.very spacious surroundings and coconut trees and acronut trees around.it's the ultimate destination for thousands of devotees.

today being shankar's birthday , a small sadya was prepared.pondered upon the last year's grand b'day celebration at home.really nice to hold celebrations with one's own people around.

down the meory lane,
near the mundikan thara[the small pambin kavu],the dried cowdung balls will be lit on the previous night of SHIV RATHRI.after two three days, when we look,we get bhasmam.
a visit to MAMMIYOOR temple and then to GURUVAYOOR temple.and we walk the distance within half an hour.we really struggled to be awake the whole night.

hearty congrats to our great a.r rehman ,rasool and gulzar.as the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles reverberates with the sweeping strains of JAI HO,a.r.rehman was poised to receive an OSCAR.........his tribute to his great father........now let's say,''INDIA SHINING''.A GLOBAL ACCLAIM at last.........

Now we,the educated keralites are pampering rasool........he is our own friend in the neighbourhood.media are giving maximum coverage to the heros......looking forward to his return to his vilage and a red carpet welcome awaits.....we must appreciate the hard earned success.it's truly said,''there's no short cut to success''.

today is the carnival of this port town.loud music and the floats fill the streets.

an early call from redwood city brightened up the day and later a call from niketha.a sincere n loving friend in mumbai .her words are from heart and hardly one gets a friend like her.she takes time to make a call on special days.and i must tell u,even if my folks forget my b'day, she won't.that gesture makes me happy and feel great.are there true friends in this world?

when niketha was here ,she always kept in touch with us.when her hubby changed the job,i lost the close friend's presence.but the equation between us has not changed.we make our presence felt through mails and phone calls.

i will not ask you,why you didn't keep up your promise.it's time and let time remind you what you should have done.

this world may be wicked.but i like to see the positive side.

we all feel ,we run out of time.still,if managed properly, one can find that extra hour to the needy.

the luxurious two days holidays end here and from now on, literally will be on my toes.

happy and energetic week to one and all.....

and to u,
mehsoos karne ki koshish tu kijiye...........
door hotey hue bhi pass nazar aayenga................

THE FLIP SIDE OF DISAPPOINTMENT...........

This post is about loretta d'souza,my local friend.we had lunch at annapurna to toast her new life.her life was a mess out of ignorance and immaturity.she happened to be my colleague for a short period and i liked her instantly for her sincerity.
she was a bundle of nerves.now she has realisedthat making mistakes and learning from them are an important part of life.to err is human, but you're innocent unless you choose to be guilty.

when i told ഹേര്‍ that i'm എ blogger now,she wanted me to write about her.

the guy who took away the beautiful years of her life is a person from our 'GOD'S OWN COUNTRY'.he was cheating her for his safe and secure future.no more comments,as he is out of her life.

a typical local with an unusual sense of honesty in her relations.morning i received a phone call from her.she was happy and confessed that she didn't settle for a man who neglected her.''i'm grateful to GOD.now i know how to draw my bottom line for a relationship.''the opportunity to learn and grow.loretta wants me to tell u she is so happy now, very positive.yoga and work keep her busy.

all of us withstand our share of disappointment in life.we get tired of doing things in the hard way.friendliness is so rare nowadays.people talk to u only when tehy need something and that's a difficult habit to break.

i look at the stories of people who inspire me.if they can overcome the difficult situations, let me also give a try.and, miracles always happen.unknown hands stretch out to me for friendship with a yellow rose.[my little star takes care of me].

i remember the better post offered to me;it had everything i wanted.:excitement, prestige and a heavy salary increase.but then some administartive problems and some political pressure;it remained at a stand still.
today, iam grateful to the SUPER POWER!!!time proved so.i've got a tremendous boost to my self-confidence.

we can make the world abetter place to live in by just saying hello.we feel lighter and more connected and we have abeter sense of well being.
one more interesting thing-saying hello to yourself each morning in the mirror recognizes the one person who needs it most.

had a nice chat with mazakkali, leena and bros.the day w as kool with mails from kishan n mahesh.
the photos of the three musketeers[courtesy-malini] at universal studio are simply rocking!!!!!

and to u,
poocho na ppocho mujhe kya hua hai...........
tere bahooooooooom me aakar...............

wishing one n all,
HAPPY SHIVRATHRI!!!!!!!!!

THE SWEET NOTHINGS................

THE NIGHT HAD A CHARM.........

''Anu,enough of carnival,write something else''..............

fine, here comes the 'touch me not feelings.........''

it was the grand birthday bash of little awdaith-his first birthday party at Lapaz gardens....well decorated hall, the loud music, the hot and soft drinks, the delicious food, the games and the wonderful crowd.........i was attending a party after along time......i felt nice.
genviv organised the games so well and i joined her and later participated too....it was fun.
to my surprise neha and sunil had come from the neighbouring town.after along time i was meeting them.we were so happy and settled down with drinks to share the recent happenings of lives.

hardly we find like minded people.someone far away promises me a close friendship with honest feelings and it could be the asset in later life...[the unexpected bonus one receives ........]''for the friendship of two,the patience of one is required''.so,friend, are you patient enough to tolerate this impatient hotpot?

a few sips of red wine had been enough for her;but sunil had clearly had a couple of glasses more than was good for him.still he was steady to shake aleg with each and everyone to the loud music played.they are a loving couple who enjoy life in full spirits.they are like newly married couple and the love is in the air around them.always they have a lot more to say...........a lucky couple, made for each other.they spread happiness and cheer around.just a matter of efforts to understand each other and then the love flows.........

and he has promised her a villa at the hill station that keeps the ocean company.''wow''..........

more than two mature adults, they behaved like teenagers.she wore a red top and tight jeans.red is back on the colour charts.Talk festive and the first colour everyone wants is red.

they are set to enjoy the traditional carnival dance FAT FAT SATURDAY at varca with hottest bands in attendance.the special attraction is chunkey pandey from bollywood.

the childhood memories flashed across my mind when i watched little adwaith cut the cake.

on that auspicious day, amma wakes me up early and i used to rush to the huge tank to have a dip in the cold water.oh my!the beautiful tank with the steps in galore and tiled roof..........the beautiful tank with kewada [kaitha poov]plants all around and when the kewada flowers bloom, the snakes come out of the holes.........the enchanting smell and the elders kept these flowers in mundupetty.the fragrance spreads[when perfumes were not heard about].

after having a bath, dressed up in new clothes and prayers in machil [pooja room], having a temple darshan of kavvetil bhagavathy.[one of the hundred and eight devi temples of kerala].lighting lamp in kalari is a must.pinne, kannane kanuvan guruvayoorampalathilekku.a delicious sadya awaits for noon.sitting on the palaka, turning to east in vadikkini, i enjoyed my birthdays to the most.the joint family and my siblings,we five and my beloved parents, the perfect family.

i miss u,amma as my birthday is coming up.[i feel like taking a long break and running away from this hectic routine of office..........]

and lately i received a huge gift packet by courier.there was warning on the pack-''kaanch ka saaman''.wondering what could be the thing,i was taken aback to see the most beautiful weighing machine made of glass.a surprise gift from kishan..and now,u tell me,how can i stand on a weighing machine with a glass top even though it's written,it will stand 150kg?am i collecting weighing machines?chechie dearest had already sent one.

hey,by the way the long wish list is available with me.next time,if you want to give me a surprise and to make sure it,is pleasant,
i will be sending you a personal mail.[jokes, apart, iam really touched, kishan,so thoughtful u are........how'z life in redwood city?]

except me, all are bothered about my figure.and when asked,കിഷന്‍'scomment''-after your work out on tread mill,u check ur weight daily''.so,what should i do?one leg on one machine and the other on the new one?and daily u expect me to reduce a kilo?are u kidding?

i know, folks,it's now clean up time.i must find an answer to that bulk gained around my waist.before next may,for GOD'S sake, don't ask me by how much i have reduced.[and can u believe, years before, amma was complaining,''anu,ur bones can be seen.please eat well and put on weight and amma didn't realise, later, her anu never stopped putting on weight..........]

by the way,i get comments recently,''anu,u have reduced, what is the secret?dieting?long walks?''iam so happy at the lavish complements and my day is made.[ooph!my!me and dieting and forget the long walks-that twenty minutes walk in the office corridors make me sweat..................]

will anyone believe chechie,if i tell, we did the alarippu together in little flower convent school for mother superior's birthday?[feast]and you are still busy with thiruvathirakkali and kolkali in sree nagar colony and i joined shaking a leg on the dance floors here.[weight didn't matter for that, when the music get into the veins......]
and i must tell you,
the night had a charm that's hard to ignore.............any guesses?

and to you,

kyun pyar ka phool nahin khilta?
kyun dil kke naghme dil nahin gaata?

CARNIVAL COMES TO TOWN

IT'S CELEBRATION TIME...........

Carnival once again kicks off to a four-day rollercoaster of fun n fiesta. It's the people's call to indulgence just before the Christian 40-day period of Lent and abstinence.Despite it's timing,Carnival has nothing to do with Christianity.

Today all roads lead to the capital city as the KING MOMO comes to town.

Accompanied by a bevy of beauties,KING MOMO will on saturday[21st feb], proclaim his reign declaring three days of fun and merriment. He will be watched by thousands of people, locals and tourists.
Let's give him rousing welcome. The carnival parade will be flagged off at 3.30 p.m.

Local village clowns and children who enthusiastically participated with ingenious ideas and creative costumes are apart and parcel of the fun.with khells[street plays]city folk get a taste of things of the past.

but, when money came into the picture, the spirit of carnival went for a toss.

Floats will be held in six categories---traditional,clubs and institutions, sponsored, family category, fun and junk cars and clowns and jokers.

An estimated Rs.15.5 lakh, including prizes worth Rs.4 lakh will be spent on the event.the rural lanscape may be devoid of any carnival colour today and the presentation may never witness
the kind of celebration theirparents had and so carnival remains atime for the elders to get nostalgic.

come ,join the fun and celebrate........

the curent KING MOMO is IVOR BRAGANZA from curchorem.he is excited about standing in the float all through the parade route waving at the crowds.
his message is,''have fun and be merry.but most importantly, love and trust your felow brothers and sisters.''
and, friends, this is one party no one should miss.

world class DJs are here like, nikhil Chinappa.hey.guys,here fu meets creativity.
viva carnival!!!!!

and to u,

kyun har dil se dil nahim milta..............[?]

wearing the mask, dressing up weirdly ,let's join the parade........

straight from my heart................

anupama-sincerlyyours.blogspot.com
this post is the reply to my friend.he was telling, there is nothing new about the posts.the happenings are the daily news we chat with each other.readily i agreed,''yes.''he was true.[but i never expected such a response].
iam happy that he takes time time to browse through my posts even though he doesn't like literature.[what do u say-a true friend?] i hope things work out in a better way for him.my sincere prayers.
when things come straight from heart,it's like fire.and some people like to be with fire. let love abide in each and every heart.so ,that it won't be a feeling to be treated as a guest.never ever share your love stories with someone who loves you silently.[that's what happened to simi.the person whom she loves and admires told her about his love for someoneelse and she had a nervous breakdown.she listened carefully, shared his romantic moments and broke down in the end].now i know, she is going to take days to get back to normal.
oh my!the most romantic day of the year is just around the corner!
do we need a special day to celebrate love?let's be in love with love itself.there are many smaller things in life.it could be wiping the tear from the eyes of the unknown person, giving a rose to the less fortunate in the neighbourhood, and causing smiles to each and everyone we meet during the day.isn't that great?love is about giving.........we may not get it back, but the joy of giving is par excellence.
we can be with our families, our friends and our dear ones.a delicious home -cooked meal is something that can work wonders.flowers convey our feelings in a better way.a person in love always expect something in red.[but my choice is jasmine-the pure white jasmine].
somewhere far away,a jasmine bud is blooming for me.
and what are the great plans guys out there have?waiting eagerly to see the photos.wishing you a pleasure trip to LA. have fun ,but within the limits.[hey,i know,u are sick of my advices].a cozy holiday away from home, you can utter the magical words to many.........as u are great tech savy, demand some latest gadgets from girls.or the bottle of your fav cologne wrapped with love also will get you bowled over.right?
this year since valentine day is falling on the weekend,it will be more exciting.Love is in the air.........have a lovely valentine's day.............GOOD LUCK[BE AWAY FROM SREERANM SENA-WE CAN'T ATTEND MANY MARRIAGES AT THE SAME MUHOORTAM...........]
it's me logging off.........

a wonderful morning .could present a script on a trip in the form of dialogues.happy i was when lots of appreciation came on the way.
the hectic work and in between the luxury of chatting in free time with friend of your choice..so far,so good........then,as usual the unnecesary wanderings of mind.....the possessiveness.....the low feelings....[to add fuel to the fire, a major repair work of pipelines and not adrop of water for two days..]..
by the end of the day,oh,iam really kool.
it's really hurting that a great blogger had to delete his favourite fifteen posts because the readers are not matured.he who has put his soul and heart to the writings took such adecision to delete the posts as someonelse was hurt.
this is real cruelty.the time taken and the feelings experienced to write those posts, noone will ever know.anyways, noone has the right to be so rude with a writer.felt real bad after reading ,the new post of manu.
happy birthday ,aparna......be a great writer and doctor.good luck.
can i start all over again?let's see.the disturbed feelings should subside........

What is sin and How is it different to other religions?

A Sistine Chapel fresco depicts the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the garden of Eden for their original sin.

Sin is a term used mainly in a religious context to describe an act that violates a moral rule, or the state of having committed such a violation. Commonly, the moral code of conduct is decreed by a divine entity.

Christian views of sin

In Western Christianity, sin is viewed as a legal infraction or contract violation, and so salvation tends to be viewed in legal terms, similar to Jewish thinking. In Eastern Christianity, sin is viewed in terms of its effects on relationships, both among people and between people and God. The Bible portrays sin as not following God's moral guidance, based on the account of Adam and Eve in the Book of Genesis. They disobeyed God by eating the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, which gave them the ability to judge and know good from evil for themselves. Thus, the moment Adam and Eve ate the fruit from the tree—which God had commanded them not to do—sinful death was born; it was an act of disobedience, thinking they could become like gods, that was the sin. However, because Eve was deceived, while Adam was not, it is usually believed that Adam held the greatest responsibility for the evil that took place, for which reason the Fall of man is referred to as the "sin of Adam". This sin caused Adam and his descendants to lose access to the Tree of Life and their years of life to be numbered. "Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned" (Romans 5:12). In Christian theology, the death of Jesus on the cross is the atonement to the sin of Adam. "For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive." (1 Corinthians 15:22).

"All the Law" could refer to the Ten Commandments in Exodus 20:1-17 that God demands of those that follow Him. In Christianity, salvation is viewed in terms of reconciliation and a genuine relationship with Christ. In Romans 6:23 it says, "the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ our Lord". Both Eastern and Western Christians agree, on the basis of Scripture, that sin serves as a barrier to one having a complete relationship with God. But in the Gospel of John 3:16 it states "For God so loved the world, He gave his only begotten son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life." This verse is a common base of Christianity (see article on John 3:16). Some Christian denominations believe that salvation is not obtained through good works but faith alone evidenced by obedience to the laws of their religion. These Christians believe that humanity falls short of the 'perfect glory' of God because of sins (imperfections), but the sacrifice of the messiah Jesus provides the potential for redemption (Romans 3:23-24). See also Biblical law in Christianity.

Islamic views of sin

Islam sees sin (dhanb, thanb ذنب) as anything that goes against the will of Allah (God). Islam teaches that sin is an act and not a state of being. The Qur'an teaches that "the (human) soul is certainly prone to evil, unless the Lord does bestow His Mercy" and that even the prophets do not absolve themselves of the blame (Qur'an [Qur'an 12:53]). Muhammad advised:

"Do good deeds properly, sincerely and moderately, and rejoice, for no one's good deeds will put him in Paradise." The Companions asked, "Not even you O Messenger of Allah?" He replied, "Not even me unless Allah bestows His pardon and mercy on me".[citation needed]

In Islam, there are several gradations of sin:

  • sayyia, khatia: mistakes (Suras 7:168; 17:31; 40:45; 47:19 48:2)
  • itada, junah, dhanb: immorality (Suras 2:190,229; 17:17 33:55)
  • haram: transgressions (Suras 5:4; 6:146)
  • ithm, dhulam, fujur, su, fasad, fisk, kufr: wickedness and depravity (Suras 2:99, 205; 4:50, 112, 123, 136; 12:79; 38:62; 82:14)
  • shirk: ascribing a partner to God (Sura 4:48)

Hindu views of sin

In Hinduism, the term sin (pāpa in Sanskrit) is often used to describe actions that create negative karma by violating moral and ethical codes. This differs from other religions like Judaism, Christianity and Islam in the sense that sin is against the will of God. In fact, it is often described in the scriptures that chanting the name of Hari or Narayana or Shiva is the one of the ways to atone for sins, prevent rebirth and attain moksha. For reference, see the famous story of Ajamila described in the Bhagavata Purana[22].

Shaivite guru Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami explains in the lexicon section of his book, Dancing with Siva, that "sin is an intentional transgression of divine law and is not viewed in Hinduism as a crime against God as in Judaeo-Christian religions, but rather as 1) an act against dharma, or moral order and 2) one's own self." Furthermore, he notes that it is thought natural, if unfortunate, that young souls act wrongly, for they are living in nescience, avidya, the darkness of ignorance.

He further mentions that sin in Hinduism is an adharmic course of action which automatically brings negative consequences. Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami explains that the term sin carries a double meaning, as do its Sanskrit equivalents: 1) a wrongful act, 2) the negative consequences resulting from a wrongful act. In Sanskrit the wrongful act is known by several terms, including pataka (from pat, "to fall"), pāpa, enas, kilbisha, adharma, anrita and rina (transgress, in the sense of omission).

He comments that the residue of sin is called pāpa, sometimes conceived of as a sticky, astral substance which can be dissolved through penance (prayashchitta), austerity (tapas) and good deeds (sukritya). Note that papa is also accrued through unknowing or unintentional transgressions of dharma, as in the term aparadha (offense, fault, mistake).

Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami further notes that in Hinduism, except for Dvaita school of Shri Madhvacharya, there are no such concepts of inherent or mortal sin, according to some theologies, which he defined as sins so grave that they can never be expiated and which cause the soul to be condemned to suffer eternally in hell.

Virtues in Hinduism: Yamas

Ranks of Ethical practices in Samkhya Hinduism:

  • Sattva(pure)- purity, clarity, and healthy calmness (Life of devotion) practiced by Sannyasa/Saints.
  • Rajas(dim)- action, change, passion, excitement, creation, generation, etc. (Life of activity)
  • Tamas(dark)- darkness, death, destruction, ignorance, laziness, inactivity, etc. (Life of indifference) practiced by asuras/demons.

Atheist views of sin

Atheism often draws a distinction between sin and an ethical code of conduct. Sin is a term generally associated with a theological belief system (which is antithetical to atheism), and is separate from the concept of "right or wrong." Atheists typically do not use the term "sinful" to refer to actions that violate their particular moral system (particularly if "sinful" is taken to mean "acting against the wishes or commands of a deity"), preferring terms such as "wrong" or "unethical," which do not carry religious connotations. Most atheists hold that moral codes derive from societal mores or innate human characteristics, rather than religious authority. Atheists may still adhere to a strong ethical code, even if they do not use the concept of sin.

"Atheism" is as vague a category as "theism", however: just as there is no universal doctrine of "theism" (apart from the basic assertion that some divine entity or entities exist), there is no universal doctrine of "atheism," and no unified atheistic view on the concept of sin.

Buddhist views of sin

Buddhism does not recognize the idea behind sin because in Buddhism, instead, there is a "Cause-Effect Theory", known as Karma, or action. In general, Buddhism illustrates intentions as the cause of Karma, either good, bad, or neutral. Furthermore, most thoughts in any being's mind can be negative.

Vipaka, the result of your Karma, may create low quality living, hardships, destruction and all means of disharmony in life and it may also create healthy living, easiness, and harmony in life. Good deeds produce good results while bad deeds produce bad results. Karma and Vipaka are your own action and result.

Pañcasīla (Pāli) is the fundamental code of Buddhist ethics, willingly undertaken by lay followers of Gautama Buddha. It is a basic understanding of the Noble Eightfold Path, which is a Buddhist teaching on ways to stop suffering.

Pancasila
  1. I undertake the rule to refrain from destroying living creatures.
  2. I undertake the rule to refrain from taking that which is not given.
  3. I undertake the rule to refrain from sexual misconduct.
  4. I undertake the rule to refrain from incorrect speech.
  5. I undertake the rule to refrain from intoxicants which lead to carelessness.
Noble Eightfold Path
  1. Right View
  2. Right Intention
  3. Right Speech
  4. Right Action
  5. Right Work
  6. Right Effort
  7. Right Mindfulness
  8. Right Concentration

These ultimately lead to cessation of suffering and thus is a way to be free of Samsara, the cycle of death. After that, Nirvana is achieved.

Jewish views of sin

Judaism regards the violation of the divine commandments to be a sin. Judaism teaches that sin is an act, and not a state of being. Humankind was not created with an inclination to do evil, but has that inclination "from his youth"(Genesis 8:21). People do have the ability to master this inclination (Genesis 4:7) and choose good over evil (conscience)(Psalm 37:27).[6] Judaism uses the term "sin" to include violations of Jewish law that are not necessarily a lapse in morality. According to the Jewish Encyclopedia: "Man is responsible for sin because he is endowed with free will ("behirah"); yet he is by nature frail, and the tendency of the mind is to evil: "For the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth" (Gen. viii. 21; Yoma 20a; Sanh. 105a). Therefore God in His mercy allowed people to repent and be forgiven."[7] Judaism holds that all people sin at various points in their lives, and hold that God tempers justice with mercy.

The generic Hebrew word for any kind of sin is avera (literally: transgression). Based on verses in the Hebrew Bible, Judaism describes three levels of sin. There are three categories of a person who commits an avera. The first one is someone who does an avera intentionally, or "B'mezid." This is the most serious category. The second is one who did an avera by accident. This is called "B'shogeg," and while the person is still responsible for their action it is considered less serious. The third category is someone who is a "Tinok Shenishba", which is a person who was raised in an environment that was assimilated or non-Jewish, and is not aware of the proper Jewish laws, or halacha. This person is not held accountable for his or her actions.

  • Pesha (deliberate sin; in modern Hebrew: crime) or Mered (lit.: rebellion) - An intentional sin; an action committed in deliberate defiance of God; (Strong's Concordance :H6588 (פשע pesha', peh'shah). According to Strong it comes from the root (:H6586); rebellion, transgression, trespass.
  • Avon (lit.: iniquity) - This is a sin of lust or uncontrollable emotion. It is a sin done knowingly, but not done to defy God; (Strong's Concordance :H5771 (avon, aw-vone). According to Strong it comes from the root (:H5753); meaning perversity, moral evil:--fault, iniquity, mischief.
  • Cheit - This is an unintentional sin, crime or fault. (Strong's Concordance :H2399 (חַטָּא chate). According to Strong it comes from the root khaw-taw (:H2398, H2403) meaning "to miss, to err from the mark (speaking of an archer), to sin, to stumble."

Judaism holds that no human being is perfect, and all people have sinned many times. However, certain states of sin (i.e. avon or cheit) do not condemn a person to damnation; only one or two truly grievous sins lead to anything approaching the standard conception of hell. The scriptural and rabbinic conception of God is that of a creator who tempers justice with mercy. Based on the views of Rabbeinu Tam in the Babylonian Talmud (tractate Rosh HaShanah 17b), God is said to have thirteen attributes of mercy:

  1. God is merciful before someone sins, even though God knows that a person is capable of sin.
  2. God is merciful to a sinner even after the person has sinned.
  3. God represents the power to be merciful even in areas that a human would not expect or deserve.
  4. God is compassionate, and eases the punishment of the guilty.
  5. God is gracious even to those who are not deserving.
  6. God is slow to anger.
  7. God is abundant in kindness.
  8. God is the god of truth, thus we can count on God's promises to forgive repentant sinners.
  9. God guarantees kindness to future generations, as the deeds of the righteous patriarchs (Abraham, Isaac and Jacob) have benefits to all their descendants.
  10. God forgives intentional sins if the sinner repents.
  11. God forgives a deliberate angering of Him if the sinner repents.
  12. God forgives sins that are committed in error.
  13. God wipes away the sins from those who repent.

As Jews are commanded in imitatio Dei, emulating God, rabbis take these attributes into account in deciding Jewish law and its contemporary application.
