Truth on Genetic Modified Food and its Effects

Harmful Effects of the GMO Agent
Genetically modified organisms (GMO’s) are a broad group of plants, animals, and bacteria that are engineered for a wide variety of applications ranging from agricultural production to scientific research. The types of potential hazards posed by GMO’s vary according to the type of organism being modified and its intended application. Most of the concern surrounding GMO’s relates to their potential for negative effects on the environment and human health. Because GMO’s that could directly effect human health are primarily products that can enter the human food supply, this website focuses on genetically modified food. To date, the only types of products that have been approved for human consumption in the U.S. are genetically modified plants (FDA website).

All genetically modified foods that have been approved are considered by the government to be as safe as their traditional counterparts and are generally unregulated (FDA website). However, there are several types of potential health effects that could result from the insertion of a novel gene into an organism. Health effects of primary concern to safety assessors are production of new allergens, increased toxicity, decreased nutrition, and antibiotic resistance (Bernstein et al., 2003).

Food Allergy
Food Allergy affects approximately 5% of children and 2% of adults in the U.S. and is a significant public health threat (Bakshi, 2003). Allergic reactions in humans occur when a normally harmless protein enters the body and stimulates an immune response (Bernstein et al., 2003). If the novel protein in a GM food comes from a source that is know to cause allergies in humans or a source that has never been consumed as human food, the concern that the protein could elicit an immune response in humans increases. Although no allergic reactions to GM food by consumers have been confirmed, in vitro evidence suggesting that some GM products could cause an allergic reaction has motivated biotechnology companies to discontinue their development (Bakshi, 2003).

Increased Toxicity
Most plants produce substances that are toxic to humans. Most of the plants that humans consume produce toxins at levels low enough that they do not produce any adverse health effects. There is concern that inserting an exotic gene into a plant could cause it to produce toxins at higher levels that could be dangerous to humans. This could happen through the process of inserting the gene into the plant. If other genes in the plant become damaged during the insertion process it could cause the plant to alter its production of toxins. Alternatively, the new gene could interfere with a metabolic pathway causing a stressed plant to produce more toxins in response. Although these effects have not been observed in GM plants, they have been observed through conventional breeding methods creating a safety concern for GM plants. For example, potatoes conventionally bred for increased diseased resistance have produced higher levels of glycoalkaloids (GEO-PIE website).

Decreased Nutritional Value
A genetically modified plant could theoretically have lower nutritional quality than its traditional counterpart by making nutrients unavailable or indigestible to humans. For example, phytate is a compound common in seeds and grains that binds with minerals and makes them unavailable to humans. An inserted gene could cause a plant to produce higher levels of phytate decreasing the mineral nutritional value of the plant (GEO-PIE). Another example comes from a study showing that a strain of genetically modified soybean produced lower levels of phytoestrogen compounds, believed to protect against heart disease and cancer, than traditional soybeans (Bakshi, 2003).

Antibiotic resistance
In recent years health professionals have become alarmed by the increasing number of bacterial strains that are showing resistance to antibiotics. Bacteria develop resistance to antibiotics by creating antibiotic resistance genes through natural mutation. Biotechnologists use antibiotic resistance genes as selectable markers when inserting new genes into plants. In the early stages of the process scientists do not know if the target plant will incorporate the new gene into its genome. By attaching the desired gene to an antibiotic resistance gene the new GM plant can be tested by growing it in a solution containing the corresponding antibiotic. If the plant survives scientists know that it has taken up the antibiotic resistance gene along with the desired gene. There is concern that bacteria living in the guts of humans and animals could pick up an antibiotic resistance gene from a GM plant before the DNA becomes completely digested (GEO-PIE website).

It is not clear what sort of risk the possibility of conferring antibiotic resistance to bacteria presents. No one has ever observed bacteria incorporating new DNA from the digestive system under controlled laboratory conditions. The two types of antibiotic resistance genes used by biotechnologists are ones that already exist in bacteria in nature so the process would not introduce new antibiotic resistance to bacteria. Nevertheless, it is a concern and the FDA is encouraging biotechnologists to phase out the practice of using antibiotic resistance genes (GEO-PIE website).

This explosive exposé reveals what the biotech industry doesn't want you to know - how industry manipulation and political collusion, not sound science, allow dangerous genetically engineered food into your daily diet. Company research is rigged, alarming evidence of health dangers is covered up, and intense political pressure applied. Chapters read like adventure stories and are hard to put down: * Scientists were offered bribes or threatened. Evidence was stolen. Data was omitted or distorted. * Government employees who complained were harassed, stripped of responsibilities, or fired. * Laboratory rats fed a GM crop developed stomach lesions and seven of the forty died within two weeks. The crop was approved without further tests. * The only independent in-depth feeding study ever conducted showed evidence of alarming health dangers. When the scientist tried to alert the public, he lost his job and was silenced with threats of a lawsuit. Read the actual internal memos by FDA scientists, warning of toxins, allergies, and new diseases - all ignored by their superiors, including a former attorney for Monsanto. Learn why the FDA withheld information from Congress after a genetically modified supplement killed nearly a hundred people and disabled thousands. The GMO Trilogy's was released in April 2006 in conjunction with Earth Day (April 22) and International GMOpposition Day (April 8)—a coordinated 30-nation campaign to raise awareness about genetically modified (GM) food. The three-disc set includes:

HAPPY HALLOWEEN SWEETIES...

Today is Halloween.
Around the world.

What memories for most of us.

Some of us are now living through
our
school aged children;

And some are now living through
our
grandchildren;

And even some yet through our greats.

We have always loved the excitement

of costumes, what are we going to be?

It has to be something so GREAT...

Something NOBODY else would think of.

Something magical...

Today kids have Halloween buckets

for their treats, or they have little bags.

We didn't have those when I was a kid;

we used a pillow case, and you tossed it

over your back much like a hobo.

It was the one time of the year,

we got candy for FREE...

Lots of candy. I remember the fun

of taking our sacks home, and sorting

through them. We would trade candies,

some we didn't like for ones we did.

Pixie straws were one of my favorites.

Popcorn balls were the BEST.
You never traded those.

I remember some of the houses were

scary, and the people sat up on the

porches in the dark waiting to holler

"BOO" when you approached.

Others would open their doors

slowwwlly, and a hand would

come out. I would run,
I didn't stick around. They

would holler to come back, but

by that time I was 2 doors down. I

didn't like the scary houses as a kid.

Tonight as the little ghosts

and goblins come around.

Give them some treats

and not to many tricks.
Pleaseeeeee.

Oh and for tonight;

DONT" FORGET:

As always, thank you for stopping by,

my little piece of heaven,

here in the desert,

that I so love to call home.

Country hugs and much love,

AC/DC are an Australian rock band formed in 1973 by brothers Malcolm and Angus Young. Although the band are commonly classified as hard rock and are considered a pioneer of heavy metal, they have always classified their music as rock and roll.

AC/DC underwent several line-up changes before releasing their first album, High Voltage, in 1975. Membership remained stable until bassist Mark Evans was replaced by Cliff Williams in 1977 for the album Powerage. The band recorded their highly successful album Highway to Hell in 1979. Lead singer and co-songwriter Bon Scott died on 19 February 1980, after a night of heavy alcohol consumption. The group briefly considered disbanding, but soon ex-Geordie singer Brian Johnson was selected to replace Scott. Later that year, the band released their best-selling album, Back in Black.

The band's next album, For Those About to Rock We Salute You, was their first album to reach number one in the United States. AC/DC declined in popularity soon after drummer Phil Rudd was fired in 1983 and was replaced by future Dio drummer Simon Wright, though the band resurged in the early 1990s with the release of The Razor's Edge. Phil Rudd returned in 1994 (after Chris Slade, whom was with the band from 1990–1994, was asked to leave in favour of him) and contributed to the band's 1995 album Ballbreaker. Stiff Upper Lip was released in 2000 and was well received by critics. Since then, the band has stayed the same with the 1980-1983 lineup. The band's most recent album, Black Ice, was released on 20 October 2008. It was their biggest hit on the charts since "For Those About to Rock, reaching #1 on all the charts eventually. AC/DC's newest studio album, AC/DC: Iron Man 2 is set to release on April 19, 2010.

As of 2008, AC/DC have sold more than 200 million albums worldwide, including 71 million albums in the United States. Back in Black has sold an estimated 45 million units worldwide, making it the highest-selling album by any band and the 2nd highest-selling album in history, behind Thriller by Michael Jackson. The album has sold 22 million in the US alone, where it is the fifth-highest-selling album. AC/DC ranked fourth on VH1's list of the "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock" and was named the seventh "Greatest Heavy Metal Band of All Time" by MTV. In 2004, the band was ranked number 72 in the Rolling Stone list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time".

AC/DC "Anti Christ / Devils Child"

Malcolm and Angus Young developed the idea for the band's name after their older sister, Margaret Young, saw the initials "AC/DC" on a sewing machine. "AC/DC" is an abbreviation for "alternating current/direct current". The brothers felt that this name symbolised the band's raw energy, power-driven performances, and a love for their music. "AC/DC" is pronounced one letter at a time, though the band is popularly known as "Acca Dacca" in Australia.

Early years (the Dave Evans era, 1973-1974)

In November 1973 Malcolm and Angus Young formed AC/DC and recruited bassist Larry Van Kriedt, vocalist Dave Evans, and Colin Burgess, ex-Masters Apprentices drummer. The band played their first gig at a club named Chequers in Sydney on New Year's Eve, 1973. They were later signed to the EMI-distributed Albert Productions label for Australia and New Zealand. The early line-up of the band changed often; Colin Burgess was the first member fired, and several bassists and drummers passed through the band during the next year.

By this time, Angus Young had adopted his characteristic school-uniform stage outfit. The idea was his sister Margaret's. Angus had tried other costumes, such as Spider-Man, Zorro, a gorilla, and a parody of Superman, named Super-Ang. In fact in its early days, most members of the band dressed in some form of glam or satin outfit but this approach was abandoned when it was discovered Melbourne band Skyhooks had already adopted this approach to their stage presentation.

The Young brothers decided that Evans was not a suitable frontman for the group, because they felt he was more of a glam rocker like Gary Glitter. On stage, Evans was occasionally replaced by the band's first manager, Dennis Laughlin, who was the original lead singer with Sherbet prior to Daryl Braithwaite joining the band. Evans did not get along with Laughlin, which also contributed to the band's ill feeling toward Evans.

Scott's death (1980)

As 1980 began, the band began work on a new album that would eventually become Back in Black, but Bon Scott would not live to see the project being finished. On February 19, 1980, Scott passed out after a night of heavy drinking in London and was left in a car owned by an acquaintance named Alistair Kinnear. The following morning, Kinnear rushed him to King's College Hospital in Camberwell, where Scott was pronounced dead on arrival. Pulmonary aspiration of vomit was the cause of Scott's death, and the official cause was listed as "acute alcohol poisoning" and "death by misadventure". Scott's family buried him in Fremantle, Western Australia, the area to which they had emigrated when he was a boy.

Inconsistencies in the official accounts of Scott's death have been cited in conspiracy theories, which suggest that Scott died of a heroin overdose, or was killed by exhaust fumes redirected into the car, or that Kinnear did not exist. Additionally, Scott was asthmatic, and the temperature was below freezing on the morning of his death.

Following Scott's death, the band briefly considered quitting; they eventually concluded, however, that Scott would have wanted AC/DC to continue, and various candidates were considered for his replacement, including Buzz Shearman, ex-Moxy member, who was not able to join because of voice problems, and ex-Back Street Crawler vocalist Terry Slesser, who turned down this opportunity when he decided not to join an established band and instead started a solo career. The remaining AC/DC members finally decided on ex-Geordie singer Brian Johnson.

Angus Young later recalled, "I remember Bon playing me Little Richard, and then telling me the story of when he saw Brian singing." He says about that night, "There's this guy up there screaming at the top of his lungs and then the next thing you know he hits the deck. He's on the floor, rolling around and screaming. I thought it was great, and then to top it off—you couldn't get a better encore—they came in and wheeled the guy off!" Later that night, Johnson would be diagnosed with appendicitis, which was the cause of his writhing around on stage.

For the audition, Johnson sang "Whole Lotta Rosie" from Let There Be Rock and Ike & Tina Turner's "Nutbush City Limits". He was hired a few days after the audition.

With Brian Johnson the band completed the songwriting that they had begun with Bon Scott for the album Back in Black. Recording took place at Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas a few months after Scott's death. Back in Black, produced by Mutt Lange and recorded by Tony Platt, became their biggest-selling album and a hard-rock landmark; hits include "Hells Bells", "You Shook Me All Night Long", and the title track. The album was certified platinum three months after its release, and by 2007 it had sold more than 22 million copies in the United States, making it the fourth-highest-selling album ever in the US. The album reached #1 in the UK and #4 in the US, where it spent 131 weeks on the Billboard 200 album chart.

PKR man fishing for votes....?

Eeks braders dan bradees.
Maaf wali songo.
Saya tak kata nak berhenti blogging.
Terima kasih banyak-banyak ramai dah concern pak chic nak retire. Belum lagi.

Atau tanya kerana nak naik haji ke? Part ini dah 4tahun booking dengan Tabung Haji, masih tunggu dalam queue.
Saya kata nak rehat kejap, sebab dah tak ada semangat tulis setiap hari.
Saya dah tak larat nak tulis diari elektronik harian macam lalu.

"Oleh itu, saya rehat mulai hari ini.
"Dah tidak akan tulis tiap hari lagi macam dulu.
"Tak tahu bila nak ada mood nak main muzik-blogging ni lagi."
Saya jangka nak tulis sekali dalam 2-4hari.

-------------------------------------
TAPI baru nak berehat ada cerita lucu yang pada masa rasa kasihan pula.
Calon PKR terjatuh ke dalam laut semalam, buat kali kedua.

Kata omputeh:
- He was fishing for votes.
- His campaign is a wash-out.
- He was diving right into the voters' problems.
- He heavily waded to rescue the villagers.

Itu jika kita, ahem, "berhati Umno".
Jika kita berhati rakyat (fulamak), kita kata "kasihan orang kampung, jambatan pun tak sempurna".

-------------------------------------
TENTANG saranan pengunjung blog.
Betoi tu, saya rasa kita ngobrol isu selain politik Malaysia dan Singapork.
Sebabnya mudah - pilihanraya semakin dekat.
Mereka sensitif jika orang cucuk jarum sana dan sini. Maklumlah saya wartawan cari makan. Bukan blogger bebas.

Once the economic growth creates a buzz among the public - eh bagusnya ekonomi kita - maka set! Terus masuk general election. Jadi mungkin ditunda kepada March, sebab program2 ekonomi masih di tahap awal.
Eh cukuplah cakap politik!
Ish.

2) Di Temasek, jika saya nak teka, pilihanraya pada December.
Tak payah tunggu hingga March, takut ekonomi USA tenggelam nanti susah - sebab ekonomi Singapork dan ekonomi US ni taliannya begitu kuat. Wall Street bersin, Singapore demam. Kata omputeh, if Wall Street sneezes, Singapore catches a cold.

Eh cukuplah tu!
Ish ish ish.
OK saya rehat hunjung minggu.

PRABATHEY,KARA DARSHANAM............................

29th,October,2010
 Friday,
        Dear Friends,
A lovely and pleasant good morning! The day is bright and beautiful after the showers! It's sunny today.
''The morning star whispers to dawn, tell me that you are only for me''.''Yes'',she answers,''And for that nameless flower too!'':)
To make the day, wonderful, smooth and lovely you may say the following prayer.Amma taught me and I want to share the same with you.
When you wake up in the morning, open your and look at the palm and say the following prayer.
Karagre vasudhe Lakshmi[Goddess Lakshmi resides on the tip of our fingers]
Kara Madhye Saraswathi...[Goddess Saraswathi resides in the middle of our palms]
Kara Mooledu Govinda[Lord Vishnu resides at the bottom of the palm, near the wrist],
Prabhathe..................Kara Darshanam.[Have the darshan of the palm in the morning].
After chanting the prayer,we must touch the floor thus, offering prayers to BHOOMI DEVI.[The Goddess of Earth].
I went to Kottappuram Siva Temple. The main prathishta is Lord Siva and right behind the sree kovil is Devi-like Mammiyoor Temple. As it is Siva temple, there is no siveli[taking the idol of God/Goddess out of Sanctum Sanctorum either in hands or on the elephant by the main priest] and elephants.Poojari gave me prasadam -red rose petals, white flowers -offered to SIVA-sandalwood paste, avil and malar on a tender palntain leaf.I felt so nice.We must apply chandanam with the ring finger of the right hand among the eyebrows on the middle spot. After the temple visit my mind is cool and I  am at peace with myself.
It's really nice to see ladies in traditional wear-the two piece-mundu and veshti.
There is a Champaka tree in front of Lord Ayyappa. The yellow fragrant flowers fall down in front of the kovil of Lord Ayyappa as the natural offering.
.Nagaraja shrine is full of green flowering creepers and climbers. The roof of the shrine of Nagaraja will be always opened.
We have Nagaraja Temple in our tharavadu. The yearly pooja is just over for Nagaraja on Aayilyam star of Kanni Masam.[Malayala Masam].Aayilyam is very auspicious for Nagas.
I feel like going for a long drive enjoying the lush green fields and swaying coconut trees.
My friends wonder why do I talk a  lot about Thrissur.I can't write a post without mentioning different temples, aspects, the beautiful people and the life style, the shops, the must-visit places.
Many of my readers may not knowThrissur is the cultural capital of Kerala,God's Own Country! This is the city with strong cultural heritage. The city encircles Shri Vadakkunnathan Temple with a vast area of greenery around. The world famous Thrissur Pooram takes place here culminating with a grand fireworks.Pulikkali is also one of the main attractions on fourth day of Onam. The city has all the facilities mainly educational facilities,Medical and engineering colleges, law college, hospitals and religious places and much more.Kochi International Airport[Nedumbassery] is just one and half drive from here.Thrissur can be easily reached from all parts of the country by rail and road. The world famous Guruvayoor Temple is only forty five minutes away.Peechi Dam,Athirappilly waterfalls, water theme parks,Kerala Kalamandalam are near to this city.
Thrissur is a land of temples and elephants. And tell me who doesn't like elephants? They are wonderful and amzing elephants.

''A single word spoken at the time of anger is so much poisonous that it makes us forget hundred lovable conversations within a minute!''
So,think twice before shooting the hurting words. They take away your sleep.

Dear Friends,
Thrissur rocks!:)Tell me now, when are you coming to Thrissur?
Evenings it rains daily. This is Thulam Masam;my favourite month.

'Instead of thinking, about what you're missing,
Try to think about what you have,
That everyone else is missing,
Life will be happy''.

Sherry Finds Art in Second Grade...

Today in sharing

Mommy's Piggy Tales,

I will be writing my story

about Second Grade.

Starting Second Grade was the best. I had

Mrs. Gladys Hasbrook for my teacher. I loved

art class and spelling. I found out that I wrote

very well, and that I could actually draw. Mrs.

Hasbrook always smelled good, and she loved

sweaters. She always wore a sweater. I used

to wonder if she was cold. Now Mrs. Umble

in first grade loved red lipstick and Mrs.

Hasbrook loved pink. (I thought all teachers

would be alike, so this was odd to me.)

In the photo above I am holding the squirrel.
During art
class the two best photos wore
chosen
to display for the newspaper when
they
came to Adams Flying A's to see what we
were working
on in class that day.
Momma and Daddy
were so proud. Momma
hurried down to the newspaper the very next
day to get the photo I still have in my
possession today. The boy beside me was

James, and he had red hair and freckles.
LaDonna was the little girl sitting beside

me. We went clear through High School

together.

Take notice of our supply boxes. Yes that

is right a King Edward cigar box, and do

you see the little bottle of paste sitting

in there? Yep, the infamous paste that

we loved smelling.

The little jumper I have on, Momma made

for me. It was light blue, and I can see it

hanging in my closet as if it were only

yesterday. Memories are just the best.

The above photo is me at Christmas. We are at

Grandma and Grandpa's Christmas breakfast.

They bought me the little sewing machine I

am turning in the photo. I was so excited. I

just knew I could make clothes like Momma

did for me. Boy was I in for a BIG surprise.

All I got was poked a bunch of times. (I

find it so amazing, that our machines had

real needles, and even our irons that went

to our ironing boards really plugged in. We

would never give that to our 7 and 8 year old

girls today.) Times sure have changed.

Again look at the curls. Now I have to tell

you I had to sleep on rollers for those curls,

and do any of you gals remember:

Dippity-Doo? Yep that always did the trick

for the curls. I wonder whatever happened

to Dippity Doo? I'll have to check into that.

Another post, yep another post.

The last photo I wanted to share was the Summer

after 2nd grade. We went to Colorado on vacation.

I am 2nd from the left, along with my sister and 2

brothers. Look at the mountains in the background.

We went to Pike's Peak, and I remember we had no

coats, and Daddy and Momma went to a general

store close by and bought us all jean jackets.

(Marydon Sweetie, you will notice this Sister did

not have a jacket on then either. You see I have

been hot blooded ALL my life. Some things just

never change. I would have had my thongs on

then too, but I am sure Daddy and Momma had

something to say about that back then.) We had

pedal pushers on. I loved them.

Another lovely memory that came to mind,

was that the cabins we stayed in, were close

to a highway, and I remember they had a big

picnic table out front of our cabin. Us kids

would sit on the table and every semi truck

that came by we would move our arms up

down to see how many we could get to honk

their horns at us. We would just laugh and

laugh. Those were fun times, yes they were

good times. (And grown up now, I realize how

expensive those vacations were, and how

hard Momma and Daddy had to work to pay

for those vacations.)

As always, thank you for stopping by

my little piece of heaven,

here in the desert,
that I so love to call home.

Country hugs and much love,
