RIP Civility and Saturday TastyLinks!

The Potter Family Easter 2003

Just to follow up on yesterday's rant, I don't think it's merely customer service that has disappeared from our culture, I think it's civility and common courtesy that have taken a hike.  It's amazing to me how inconsiderate and self involved people are these days.  Everyone is in a little 'me' bubble and it makes them feel entitled to take whatever they want, from whomever they want, whenever they want it.  The most basic human kindnesses and niceties have dissolved and it is evident from the vitriolic tone of the TV pundits and the way that has filtered down into a 'me versus them' mentality that colors virtually every human interaction.

People walk around texting, chatting on cell phones, checking email and Facebook messages and they've forgotten to connect to the three dimensional people whom they encounter on the way.  We're hyper connected on an electronic level and completely disconnected on a personal level.  We're angry, we're stressed out, we're rude and we're mean.  It's sad and it's scary, but I hold out hope that compassion makes a come back soon because without it we've really lost something crucial.  Without it the fabric of society will continue to tear until we're so fractured and fragmented it may not be possible to piece meal it back together.  And that's the bigger problem that filters down into why we can't find good customer service anymore.  Nice has gone out of fashion and rude gets you on reality shows and the cover of US magazine, don't  ya know.  The customers are rude and impatient and that filters into the customer service people being rude and impatient, so it's most definitely a two way street.

I try to be polite, to be compassionate and to be kind.  I don't always succeed.  Sometimes I'm just as self absorbed as the next gal.  It's my sincere goal to become more mindful of the way that I move through the world and to hopefully spread little seeds of positivity here and there and perhaps if more of us do this, good things will bloom.

And now I am stepping down from my soap box to share this week's fabulously craftacular links from the Crafty Bloggers!
