We had been talking about it for some time.
Finally we made a reservation and just went.
The Verde Canyon Railroad.
It is a 4 hour round trip ride
through the Verde Canyon.
We rode in the Tucson car.
We rode coach this trip.
We have decided the next
time, First Class. For the difference
in money, it is SO worth it.
Each rail car, also has an outside car.
You can sit out there and take wonderful
photos, and there is also a tour guide out
there who talks you through the trip. Now
yesterday it was about 38 degrees, but let
me tell you, that didn't stop most of the tour
goers that were on our car.
And we are off. As we rounded a couple of
bends I was able to get photos of the engines
on the front.
Just look at one of the many.
It was a really long train.
A Sinagua Indian Cliff Dwelling clings to the
walls of the canyon, almost halfway up
the cliff face. It is thought that the Sinagua
moved into the Verde Valley are between
1100 and 1125 A.D.
The highest and longest trestle on the route is one that
spans S.O.B. Canyon, approximately 150 feet above
the landscape. It was built using men and mules.
It's a long way down. Could we just move this
train right on over this trestle bridge.
Who the heck asked us to stop here?
Absolutely breathtaking.
Such desert beauty. I love all the colors.
Look at the Verde River. It was really moving along
fast, and they said the water would be quite cold.
According to local Native American lore,
the Verde River is female.
In the far distance you can see the snow
capped mountains? Those would be the
San Francisco peaks. That is about as close
to snow as this gal is going to get. Isn't
it beautiful though?
This good looking guy, I found along the way.
I decided to take him home with me.
He's a keeper. Thanks for the beautiful
day my sweet husband.
After our train trip, driving back to the valley,
we took Exit 242 and stopped at the Rock Springs
Cafe. One of our favorites. The food is reasonable,
great tasting, and if you like pie, well they have the
best. Yummy is all I can say.
In closing tonight. This is what we have had today,
all day long, and still coming down tonight. Yes,
rain, rain and more rain. I am so glad we took our
trip yesterday and not today.
As always, thank you for stopping by,
my little piece of heaven,
here in the desert,
that I so love to call home.
Country hugs and much love,
